What's the story of Joan d' Arc from an atheist's perspective?
I'm still deconstructing religion and her story still holds a place in my heart for some reason
Neurological disorder or mental illness.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_of_Arc
Modern scholars have discussed possible neurological and psychiatric causes for her visions. Her visions have been described as hallucinations arising from epilepsy or a temporal lobe tuberculoma. Others have implicated ergot poisoning, schizophrenia, delusional disorder, or creative psychopathy induced by her early childhood rearing. One of the Promoters of the Faith at her 1903 canonization trial argued that her visions may have been manifestations of hysteria. Other scholars argue that Joan created some of the visions' specific details in response to the demands of the interrogators at her trial.
Keep in mind that we don't have to be able to explain her "visions" in order to reject the "explanation" that she was in telepathic communication with a magical space wizard who invented the universe with a magic spell. Or even believe that she had these "visions" at all. We don't have to "disprove" what has not been proven. And the "visions" and their purported supernatural origin are not established, evidence-based fact.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_of_Arc
Many of these explanations have been challenged; the trial records designed to demonstrate that Joan was guilty of heresy are unlikely to provide the objective descriptions of symptoms needed to support a medical diagnosis.
It's true that we can't reliably diagnose her from the trial records. Mostly because people were more ignorant back then and didn't collect the evidence or data which would enable us to use our better knowledge to explain it. But that's not our fault.
But it's also the same reason we can't conclude telepathy with a magical space wizard. What are the "objective descriptions of phenomena needed to support a supernatural explanation"? What are they? And why do medical diagnoses need objective facts, but not claims of supernatural magic?
We can simply ask ourselves, which is more likely: neurological disorder/mental illness, or telepathic communication with a magical space wizard? We know neurological disorders and mental illnesses are real, we have good evidence they exist, even if we don't have conclusive evidence that she had one. We don't have any evidence of a magical space wizard, so the medical diagnosis already has a massive leg up on the supernatural magical explanation.
It's worth noting that the people who reject these more mundane medical explanations for Joan are the same ones who will reject Muhammad's divine communications with Allah, on the basis of it being more likely temporal lobe epilepsy, schizophrenia or regular old fraud. And even reject that "god" told Kenneth Copeland to assemble a fleet of private jets, on the basis of him being an unrelenting, inveterate con artist.
So, in the defenders of this mythology, what you have is inconsistent skeptics who decline to accept similar claims on equally questionable grounds.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_of_Arc
Joan's firm belief in the divinity of her visions strengthened her confidence, enabled her to trust herself, and gave her hope during her capture and trial.
Dumbo's feather strengthened his confidence, enabled him to trust himself and gave him hope. This paragraph is embarrassing, not to mention completely useless.
What this is doing is retreating from "this belief is true" to "this belief is useful." We have to ask ourselves whether what we're interested in is what's true, or what's useful.
A popular retort from the faithful is something along the lines of, why would she allow herself to be burned to death if it wasn't true? You've heard this before in regard to the "persecution" of the early Xians. This is, of course, only a measure of fanaticism, not truth. Islamic terrorists are so sure they're willing to blow themselves up, yet this holds no weight with Xians as far as whether Islam is true.
It's a real shame "god" didn't help her escape her captors as he did the Israelites, though. Him untying her, parting the flames and levitating her to safety would have been an even more compelling demonstration of "god's will" than the predictable outcome of a person being burned to death. But instead, he went, "nah, I'mma be mysterious."

Round 1, Side B - Wellan (The Knights of Emerald) vs. Jeanne d'Arc (real life, France)
Propaganda:
Wellan (The Knights of Emerald)
No propaganda submitted.
Jeanne d'Arc (real life, France)
They were visited by archangels with divine visitations, guiding them into battle, for which they were martyred. Non-fictional, but the archetypal paladin.

every once in a while you just look at joan of arc and you realize that maybe they're really really the coolest historic figure . she talked with god- and god said to not be afraid- but she wasn't; she fought for her country, and heard the angels. she was a girl, in 1400. she fought without hesitations just to be burned alive by the ones who she saved, but she didn't stop believing. she was born as s sacrifice. even fucking jesus christ, "the embodiment of god, the incarnation of the creator of this world came down, and was an atheist for a moment- Hozier" , saying, when left alone on the cross; "my god, my god, why hast thou forsaken me? -Mattew". i'm not ever religious, but-god, god, joan d'arc.

top 5 film recs
Putting a lot of thought into this a la film student so I'm just choosing some of the 5 best movies I've seen that I think also capture the beauty of film as an artistic medium.
In no particular order
Burning (Lee Chang-Dong, 2018)
Deliveryman Jongsu is out on a job when he runs into Haemi, a girl who once lived in his neighborhood. She asks if he’d mind looking after her cat while she’s away on a trip to Africa. On her return she introduces to Jongsu an enigmatic young man named Ben, who she met during her trip. And one day Ben tells Jongsu about his most unusual hobby… (Letterboxd)
A mesmerizing psychological thriller that totally gets in your head yet has a somewhat meandering pace that captures the drawn out nature of these sorts of stories in real life. Breathtaking cinematography. One of my top five and I think a must watch for fans of the genre and/or Korean cinema.
Sans Soleil (Chris Marker, 1983)
“He wrote me…” A woman narrates the thoughts of a world traveler, meditations on time and memory expressed in words and images from places as far-flung as Japan, Guinea-Bissau, Iceland, and San Francisco. (Letterboxd)
Experimental film at its finest this movie always blows my mind. Moving, contemplative, wonderous. Marker is also just a really important Dude in film history.
The Passion Of Joan of Arc (Carl Theodor Dreyer, 1928)
A classic of the silent age, this film tells the story of the doomed but ultimately canonized 15th-century teenage warrior. On trial for claiming she’d spoken to God, Jeanne d’Arc is subjected to inhumane treatment and scare tactics at the hands of church court officials. Initially bullied into changing her story, Jeanne eventually opts for what she sees as the truth. Her punishment, a famously brutal execution, earns her perpetual martyrdom. (Letterboxd)
Fuck it silent film. Watched this with a church choir accompaniment and it left me stunned. The first silent film that gave me an oh moment. Reminds you that the medium can transcend so many barriers with so little. I also just think watching silent films or just really old movies is sooo important because it puts the new stuff in a different light sometimes to see the OG filmic storytelling devices.
Moonlight (Barry Jenkins, 2016)
The tender, heartbreaking story of a young man’s struggle to find himself, told across three defining chapters in his life as he experiences the ecstasy, pain, and beauty of falling in love, while grappling with his own sexuality. (Letterboxd)
Genuinely believe it's one of the best movies made in the 21st century. Gut wrenching and poignant, great writing, beautiful colour grading, amazing casting, one of the best scores I've ever heard (Nicholas Britell stays WINNING I even own it on vinyl), it's just a show stopper for me and an amazing queer film. I think if you haven't seen this but you loved Sciamma's Portrait of a Lady on Fire they have very similar energies.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (Yoshiaki Kawajiri, 2000)
D has been hired to track down Meier Link, a notoriously powerful vampire who has abducted a woman, Charlotte Elbourne. D’s orders are strict - find Charlotte, at any cost. For the first time, D faces serious competition. The Markus Brothers, a family of Vampire Hunters, were hired for the same bounty. D Must intercept Meier and conquer hostile forces on all sides in a deadly race against time. (Letterboxd)
Genuinely one of the only movies I think has accurately captured gothic vampire literature, it just has the VIBE of Dracula and Carmilla in a way no other movie has. It's not actually about those books, but I think it just has the essence that adaptations miss. A great example of the power of animation!!! (Also you can literally watch it for free on youtube soooo...)
If you read all these thank you for listening... hope I inspired you to watch even one of these suggestions ! My only regret is that I didn't include any lesbian cinema.

I dunno why it's taken me this long to clock all the npmd mentions you've done that weren't even subtle girl(gender neutral) it's been weeks and it just did not enter my brain until now
Anyway
Do you have a Favourite lord in black and/or a Favourite nerd? (Mine are tinky and grace <3<3)
So I first saw this very early in the morning, and I very much misread it as you realizing that I was a girl (gender neutral), which I do think is very very funny anshdhdjf
I am also chuckling at the idea of me very obviously saying ‘Gee I sure do love Starkid’ and you just standing there like 🤔
Hi hello!!!! I do indeed love Starkid, and while npmd isn’t my faaaaaavorite of the hachetfield trilogy, (that honor goes to Black Friday, ily Black Friday), I do love the music and the characters, it’s definitely the most well produced in terms of its music. Very very cool
Ooooo the lord in black question is very difficult…..appearance-wise I’m gonna have to say Nibbly or Blinky. I really like eye motifs and eye imagery, so it’s a natural match.
As for Nibbly, he’s my favorite token™️ lord in black, for the costume and the aesthetic. Love him.
As for overall favorite, I’d have to go with Wiggly, surprisingly. This definitely has to do with my love of Black Friday, but he’s still my favorite overall villain from the trilogy, Jon Matteson’s voice acting is absolutely stellar, and his plush design is so so cool. I made little felt pins of the lord in blacks for Christmas for my friends, and wiggly actually turned out my favorite, he looked so cool. Maybe someday I’ll post some pictures of them lol.
GRACE CHASITY 🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶
She’s SO fucking me fr, that’s just how I am, I love her from the depths of my heart, she’s utterly unhinged <333333
I hope to god that someday I can play her in a show, I’d do SO well. Alto Queens unite!!!!!
Angela’s line read of ‘so you do know the Bible’ has me under lock and KEY, she’s SO mental
As an asexual I’d marry her ily Grace Chasity you will forEVER be famous. Dirty Girl is iconic 😌😌
I’m not really active in the Starkid fandom bc cats obv, but also they scare me like a lot. And don’t seem that friendly 😰 one of them blocked me for my opinion on Ted that I apologized for later, and I agonized over it for a week before realizing that it literally wasn’t my fault lmaooo.
Also I do have some opinions that prolly wouldn’t go over well in there, (I had a lot of feelings about workin’ boys lol)
That being said, going through the tags on the Twisted vs Cats poll is my favorite pastime. It’s so fucking funny to me. The girls are fightinngggggg
#asks!!!!!!!#tbh I do feel like a girl (gender neutral) a lot lol#I have a weird relationship with gender that’s hard for me to explain and also I don’t want to explain it#what if I get canceled/delusional#the fastest way to explain it is call me a girl in a Gerard Way/Joan of Arc fashion#my pronouns are I me myself and everything else is ur problem#ANYHOW I’m actually being Nibbly for Halloween :3#I think most of my friend group is going as lords in black#and since I’m the only girl™️ in the group imma be nibbly :D#I aDORE quoting max’s line just before dirty girl#I love…Jesus 😄✝️!!!! but I also love….to FUCK’#ahajsbdhhsh it’s just so funny#it’s also super out of character for me as a well known asexual#I love doing that shit it’s so funny#now I know what I look like in ur mind I keep picturing that little me explaining this like an animated intro lolll#what else do I even tag this?#nerdy prudes must die#npmd#that seems fine#don’t mind me guys

Listening: Joan of Arc and the Open Hearth's 2023 Gaming Highlights
I’m fascinated by Joan of Arc, ever since reading Joan of Arc: a history by Helen Castor. Might have to do some daydreaming about this on Daydreaming about Dragons. I’ve got a seed of an idea of how a Joan of Arc would look in the Dolmenwood setting but I haven’t found the ground to plant it in just yet. It is always nice to hear the Open Hearth (formerly The Gauntlet) folks talk about their…
